Brown treesnakes are thought to have been accidentally introduced onto guam after WWII as a stowaway in military ships and/or planes. They are native to the Indonesian islands, Soloman islands and Northern Australia.

Before their introduction, Guam had many ground nesting birds but the snake has since caused nine species of bird to go extinct in the wild. Hawaii currently has no native snakes and it is important the brown treesnake does not settle there. Precautions are taken to make sure incoming planes and ships traveling from Guam are snake-free.
