The title of this original woodcut is, "Devonian Reef---Age of Sponges." Ammonites, Trilobites, Sponges, Cnidarians, Hydrozoas, and Echinoderms wriggle about. The Devonian was a fantastic geological period commonly known as the "age of fishes" because the diversity of the finned and gilled was so great.

This piece also pertains to my home, Ithaca, NY though you wouldn't immediately suspect. The Devonian Period was almost named The Ithacan but Devon, England had more clout (at the time, and probably still.) The Marcellus Shale in upstate NY which has recently become rather infamous because large gas companies are hoping to pillage the land in search for natural gas by a terrible procedure called "hyrdofracking." They would be digging into rocks that were laid more than 240 million years ago full of fossilized sea life, cracks and fissures which the natural gas and chemicals could escape into the atmosphere and into the water. The whole idea makes me sick. Another local, Sandra Steingraber has been speaking out publicly against the procedures. Here is a short article she wrote for Orion magazine which is well worth the read if you are not already well versed in the topic.
