Orchid Mantis original woodcut
The orchid mantis is a gorgeous insect living in the humid forests of Malaysia. It's body mimics flower petals and it is known as an ambush predator, waiting for unsuspecting pollinators to land on flowers around them and then they pounce! The prey didn't know what was coming. Female orchid mantis' are about 2x the size of their male counterparts, and if the male isn't careful, she will gobble him up after mating.
I am so fond of the monochromatic nature of this piece. It's so fun and pink!! And, I love that I get to make art about weirdo creatures like this. Just look at their fine veined wings and unique eyeballs. But their story is really what attracted me to them. Gotta love a strong female character.
